Co-ordinator : David Blond
Prerequisite
Propriétés mécaniques et physiques des matériaux (1MAC1)
Outils et moyens de fabrication (1MAC4)
Course Objectives
Knowlegde of tools to understand the equilibrium microstructure of metals and alloys, from the crystallographic structure to the representative volume element.
To have a general culture about the main metals and metal alloys.
Syllabus
- Metallurgy, microstructure and macroscopic properties
- The metal as a chemical element: main metals and intrinsic properties
- Recall of crystallography applied to metals, importance of crystalline defects in macroscopic properties
- Phase diagram and equilibrium microstructure of metal alloys
Practical work (TD or TP)
Tutorial classes:
- Applications of some properties (density, thermal expansion, electrical resistivity)
- Representative crystallographic structures, compact structures and insertion sites, Miller indices, and X-ray diffraction identification
- Studies of some binary diagrams and related alloys

Demonstrations:
- Elaboration of a binary diagram
- Critical strain hardening of an aluminium alloy,
- Study of the microstructures of several steel alloys
- Identification of a metal alloy by Xray diffraction
Acquired skills
- Know how to describe and understand the crystallographic structure of the different constituent phases of a metal alloy (solid solution, defined compound)
- Know how to locate and move in cubic and hexagonal crystals,
- Know how to identify a crystallographic structure (X-ray diffraction)
- Know how to read a phase diagram
- Understand isothermal transformations and predict equilibrium microstructure
