Nuclear Instrumentation and Measurements

2E2AC2 Nuclear Instrumentation and Measurements Electronics and Applied Physics S8
Lessons : 24 h TD : 14 h TP : 12 h Project : 0 h Total : 50 h
Co-ordinator : Marc Labalme
Prerequisite
General knowledge in Statistics and Probability, Nuclear Physics and Radiation Matter Interactions. Knowledge of the main characteristics of PWRs.
Course Objectives
The course aims to give students a knowledge of the operating principles, properties and conditions of use of radiation detectors, including gaseous detectors, scintillators and semi conductors. Detector applications in the dismantling, industrial process and French PWR control.
The measurement part provides the theoretical and practical knowledge required for the understanding and implementation of measurement systems in the nuclear field.
Syllabus
- Scintillators, semiconductors and gaseous detectors basics.
- Comparative study of the properties of different detectors.
- Neutron detection: specific detectors used in nuclear reactors (Bore deposition detectors, fission chamber, SPND)
- Standards and Units in the field of nuclear power (international organization)
- Uncertainty calculation, decision threshold and detection
- Measuring chain
- Concrete case study: ex-core and in-core neutron measurement, gamma measurement
Practical work (TD or TP)
Application and operation of the different families of detectors (Gaseous, scintillator, semiconductor). Uncertainty Calculation - Limit of Detection and Decision Threshold
PW: Use of neutron detectors. Activation measurement. Statistical interpretation of the results.
Acquired skills
At the end of this course and the sessions of Applications and PW, the engineer student will be familiar with the detectors and the measurement methods commonly used in the nuclear field.
Application to PWR control and decommissioning.
